For the WE ARE REPLAY Autumn Winter 2011-12 collection, research remains the key word. Once again, the archives of the firm have a leading role to play in original experimental processes and applications with an almost hand-made style, giving rise to a collection aimed at those who are not afraid to show the strong, eclectic side to their personality. The mood of the season is a breath of fresh Western air, in the sense of a lifestyle free from constraints and preconceptions rather than a reflection of the images characteristic of the Wild West of America. Here we find an urban approach, a look à la Midnight Cowboy, freely interpreted as only a brand with a rocker soul such as We Are Replay could be capable of.
Set against this backdrop, the denim treatments are dirty and destroyed, with leather-look effects obtained by coating and dirty dusting effects with a distinct workwear attitude. Especially interesting are the patterns taken from the typical ponchos of the Navajo, and the unique, unexpected snakeskin effect for women, created using a needle punching technique. Among the fits for women is the new low-waisted slim flare, while for men we find skinny, slim and regular fits.
As an ironic celebration of the cowboy spirit, all the denims come with a bandana; bandana prints also feature on the lining of the pockets and the label at the rear.
As for tops, the star of the season is undoubtedly the shirt: for men, the classic jeanswear version, characterised by aggressive washes, darning and dirty effects, in ginger coloured lined leather or in a check version with chambray on the inside; for both him and her, a romantic version with mother of pearl buttons or classic liberty prints. Women’s shirts lengthen into dresses, with a lace hem reminiscent of the pioneers, or shimmer thanks to the gold lurex lace featured all over and the matching buttons.
A prevailing western spirit conquers the sweatshirts and t-shirts, especially the sweatshirt with an all-over Navajo print and fur lining. The theme is also evident in the torn, distressed denim bustier. The jackets are in leather, with the men’s models composed of a variety of pieces held together with laces and the braided loop fastenings on the shoulder, and the women’s versions characterised by extra-long fringes cascading down the forearm. And for those with the bottle to carry it off, there’s the natural python print version.
Coats are replaced by Seventies-style vintage cardigans for him and hand-knitted maxi-ponchos for her.
Printed braiding and fringes also move into the t-shirt universe, featured on patterns together with other characteristic elements such as pistols, fire-horses and motifs taken from the decorations typical of saddles and spurs, given a decidedly contemporary twist.
The colour palette runs the gamut of brown shades, from ginger to reddish brown, and also features violet-grey and a dark pink for the womenswear: all in rigorously dusty versions.
